The Silky Terrier dog breed is also known as the Sidney Terrier or Australian silky terrier is very similar to the Yorkshire terrier. The Silky is a tiny boned long haired little dog. The Silkys body is quite tiny and compact. The ears should be straight up in a v shape and the tail should be docked. The little face should be most recognizable by the nose area. The nose should look like its going upward. The Silky Terrier will also have little black eyes that are alert looking. The coat on this type of dog breed will be very fine and silky to the touch. The hair will be long and cover the body. The Silky terriers coat can range in color. There are blue silkies, and red silky terriers, as well as blue with tan markings and light tan coilors. The most common coloring for the Silky terriers coat is the black coloring. The Silky is born an all black color and as they age the coloring can change and lighten up.
The Silky terrier is known by Silky terrier breeders and breed lovers as a very loving and affectionate little terrier. The breed is also known for its high intelligence and alertness. Silky puppies are very spunky and sociable. They like to be close to the family and are often known to be lap dogs. They like to relax with you at times but can be more energetic than mellow. These dogs are known to be diggers so it is recommended not to leave them alone in a backyard. The silky terrier can be a wonderful little family dog if well socialized from birth by a reputable silky terrier breeder. These little dogs can be willful and may not take to little children who are not calm. This breed will be okay with kids as long as they are raised from a young age around the children. The silky terrier can be very protective and makes a good little watch dog. They will alert you at the first sign of a stranger. Since the breed is so small they are perfect companions for traveling. They fit perfectly in a carrier or purse. This little terrier can sometimes pick fights with other dogs and cats if not well socialized already with the other household pets. This is recommended early on. The Silky Terrier is very easy to train because they are super smart and love to please. They are very eager to learn.
The Silky Terrier is a good dog breed for those individuals who live in an apartment or smaller home. Silky pups are very active indoors and will not need a yard or large outdoor area for play. They are full of spunk and can play games inside and still be able to get enough exercise. They do enjoy walks outdoors and going places with you but it is not necessary for exercise. This little terrier can adapt well to the new owners schedule and environment.
As far as grooming your new silky, they require a bit of combing and brushing. Since the breed has long fine hair it can get tangled easily. A bath every now and then is a good idea and their silky is considered a breed that is hypoallergenic or non-shedding.
